If so, there are Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarships available to individuals looking to start their initial teacher training in the academic year 2024/25. If awarded a scholarship, you will receive a tax-free bursary of £30,000, complimentary membership of key mathematical societies, and excellent opportunities for CPD, networking and knowledge-sharing during your initial teacher training year. To apply for a Scholarship, an individual is required to meet the following criteria:
- Be eligible for student finance
- Have, or are expected to achieve:
- A first or 2:1 undergraduate degree, or a postgraduate degree (MSc, MRes, MPhil or PhD), or;
- A 2:2 undergraduate degree, and also have significant relevant experience.
- They meet one of the following:
- Have, or are studying for, a degree with strong mathematical content (eg mathematics, physics, engineering).
- Have a degree with strong mathematical content (eg mathematics, physics, engineering) and will complete, or have completed, a Maths Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course (SKE) of any duration prior to September 2024
- Have a non-mathematical degree and will complete, or have completed, a maths subject knowledge enhancement course (SKE) of a minimum of 20 weeks in duration prior to September 2024
- Have a non-mathematical degree with extensive mathematical professional experience. Ultimately secure a training place on an eligible secondary mathematics PGCE or unsalaried mathematics course in England which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) status for the 2024/25 academic year. - Ultimately, secure a training place on an unsalaried mathematics course in England which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) status for the 2024/25 academic year, such as with CTSN SCITT.
NB there are also Department for Education £28,000 bursaries available to train to teach maths
You do not need to apply for a bursary. If you’re eligible, you’ll automatically receive it. You cannot receive both a bursary and a scholarship.
To be eligible for a bursary, you’ll need at least one of the following:
- a bachelor’s degree class 2:2 (honours) or higher
- a master’s degree
- a PhD
If your course combines two subjects (for example, maths and pe), at least 50% of your course content must be made up of the bursary subject to be eligible.
You’ll also need to meet the bursary scheme’s individual terms and conditions.
