Pay scales for teachers and leaders in England from September 2021

The main changes to the School teachers’ pay and conditions document since 2020 include:

  • the September 2021 pay award
  • introduction of an advisory pay points structure for for the unqualified teacher pay range (UTPR);
  • a payment mechanism for tutoring delivered by main pay range teachers and upper pay range teachers to address learning disruption as a result of the the coronavirus pandemic;
  • a change in the number of days and hours that teachers must be available to work as a result of the additional Bank Holiday on Friday 3rd June 2022 to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee; and
  • changes to the statutory provisions for teacher induction which come into force on 1 September 2021.

In 2020/21, the average salary for a primary school teacher was £36,900. The average salary for a secondary school teacher was £39,900.

For 2021-22 the minimum salary will be £25,714, rising to £41,604. Teacher can also get ‘teaching and learning responsibility’ (TLR) payments as they take on extra responsibilities. These can add between £2,873 and £14,030 per year to a teacher’s income.

Teachers get more holidays than people in many other professions. Full-time teachers work for 195 days per year in school.
